All students in our school district had the opportunity this week to participate in the Hour of Code, an international celebration of computer science. The Hour of Code gives students an opportunity to practice coding skills by using fun tutorials to show that anybody can learn the basics. This global initiative began in December 2013 and activities to help students learn about computer science have been planned by Mrs. Lisa Fox and her Information Technology classes each year. Alex Englot and Brodie Rogers, who are enrolled in Computer Science Principles, completed the research to prepare for the Hour of Code conducted at the grade school this year. High School students in Information Technology classes and other student volunteers traveled to the DCS elementary to work with groups of K-6th grade students on apps that practiced sequencing and looping. They also learned about artificial intelligence and the data that helps train robots. While there may have been a few "bugs" in the programming, it was a fun learning experience for all of the students.
